After the great success of the fourth incarnation of Cycling for Libraries between Montpellier and Lyon in the summer of 2014, the French association Cyclo-Biblio vowed to continue carrying out advocacy projects every year, to get the message out about the importance of the role of libraries, and of course, always to continue to do so by bicycle!
Its purpose, in its statutes, is “the organization and management of events aimed at the promotion of libraries, using the bicycle as a means of travel and/or communication”.
In the following summer of 2015 more than 50 librarians and library lovers cycled 215 km from Basel (Switzerland) to Strasbourg (France) to promote libraries and exchange between professionals to improve their practices.
Their arrival in Strasbourg was timed to coincide with the 2015 congress of the Association des Bibliothécaires de France (ABF), a privileged partner of the tour. It was once again a great success with lots of positive press coverage.
The 2016 version gathered more than 50 librarians for an enjoyable unconference pedalling the beautiful scenery between Toulouse and Bordeaux, stopping at various libraries along the way
Cyclo-Biblio organises professional events for anyone working in libraries, and for library lovers. Along the way, they visit libraries both large and small to meet fellow librarians and local elected officials.
They also speak to the press about our project and more broadly about the missions of libraries in our societies, as well as conducting workshops and last but not least they discuss different issues while cycling in the true spirit of collaboration and sharing.
