Trek Powerfly FS+ 5

The Trek Powerfly FS+ 5 is for making big, hilly off-road days feel properly achievable. It combines a full-power Bosch system, a removable 800 Wh battery and sensible full suspension in a £4,000 current UK build that sits above the more utility-led Powerfly+ FS 4 options and below the better-equipped FS 6 and FS 8. Trek’s current public name is Powerfly+ FS 5 Gen 4, but this page keeps the familiar Powerfly FS+ 5 name for straightforward price comparison.

It suits newer e-MTB riders finding their feet, improving trail riders and experienced recreational riders who would rather extend a favourite loop than turn back at the next steep climb. Forest roads, trail-centre laps, rough tracks and long exploratory rides are its natural habitat. The 130 mm front and 120 mm rear travel give it the comfort and control for uneven ground without pretending it is a long-travel enduro or downhill machine.

The current Gen 4 build

The current UK model is one technical build, available in Fury Red or Blue Sage/Catalina Fog. Those are colour choices rather than different component packages. Some retailers use a 2027 label, but Trek identifies the bike by its Powerfly+ Full Suspension Gen 4 platform rather than a published official model year. For a current-spec bike, the useful signs are Gen 4 identification and the fitted 800 Wh battery.

That £4,000 build brings a Bosch Performance Line CX smart system supplied at 85 Nm, a Purion 200 control, Shimano 12-speed gearing with a 10-51T cassette, and Shimano BR-MT620 four-piston brakes with 203 mm rotors at both ends. It is a practical specification for a heavy full-power e-bike: low gears help on long climbs, while the larger rotors offer welcome heat capacity when the descent runs longer than expected.

Comfort for long miles, not a gravity-bike brief

The aluminium frame uses Trek’s Active Braking Pivot, Mino Link and adjustable leverage rate. ABP is designed to keep the rear suspension active under braking, while the adjustable chassis and suspension layout give an owner scope to tune the feel rather than living with one fixed setup. The RockShox Psylo Silver RC fork and Deluxe Select shock are functional trail components, although riders who place sophisticated damping high on the wish list may see more reason to step up within the range than to buy this bike with an immediate suspension upgrade in mind.

The published geometry, wheel formats and claimed mass point towards a planted, stability-first ride rather than the quick-change direction of a lightweight trail bike. Size S is a distinct package, using 27.5-inch wheels and a 65.0° head angle. M, L and XL use 29-inch wheels with a 66.0° head angle. Larger wheels should help the bigger sizes roll smoothly through roots and ruts, while the smaller wheel format keeps the S frame proportionate. Each size is intended to retain its original wheel diameter.

On climbs, the Bosch assistance, broad cassette and rear suspension should make traction and steady progress the bike’s strongest cards. On the way down, the dropper post, four-piston brakes and balanced suspension travel support composed trail riding. Its limits begin where repeated big hits and high-speed gravity riding demand substantially more than 130 mm at the fork and 120 mm at the rear. It is happier covering ground all day than chasing downhill laps.

A battery system that fits real life

The PowerTube 800 Wh battery is removable through Trek’s RIB 2.0 system, which is useful when the bike lives in a shed, garage or vehicle without a handy socket. It also makes transport and storage more manageable. The supplied Bosch 2A charger takes approximately 7 hours from empty to full, so this is best treated as an overnight charge rather than a quick turnaround between two long rides.

There is scope to stretch the day further with Bosch PowerMore, but the range extender, 100 mm reversed connection cable and mounting hardware are separate purchases. Compatible 600 Wh and 800 Wh PowerTube batteries can also be used with the appropriate RIB 2.0 fittings. The 800 Wh unit is the better fit for fewer charging stops; a smaller battery favours lower weight instead.

Rack and mudguard mounts, light routing and bottle provision on every size make the frame adaptable for wet commutes as well as weekend exploration. A rack, full mudguards, lights and PowerMore are not supplied as standard, so factor those extras in when practical transport is part of the plan. The complete bike, rider and cargo must stay within the 136 kg system limit.

Wet-weather ownership and everyday handling

At a claimed 24.58 kg in size M, the Powerfly FS+ 5 is substantial when the motor is off and awkward to carry up repeated flights of stairs. Removing the battery where appropriate helps when lifting or loading, and any vehicle rack needs to be rated for the bike’s weight. In return, that mass accompanies a large battery and a reassuringly solid full-suspension package for long rides.

UK winter riding asks a little routine care in exchange for that freedom. Rinse off grit from the drivetrain and suspension after muddy rides, but keep high-pressure water away from bearings, electrical interfaces and the battery latch. Keep the charge port and battery connection clean, monitor brake-pad wear, and refresh tubeless sealant periodically. The tubeless-ready wheels are useful on rough trails, but they are not maintenance-free.

How Gen 4 moves on from the legacy Powerfly FS

The current Powerfly+ Full Suspension Gen 4 platform is a meaningful step on from the legacy Powerfly FS Gen 3 platform. Gen 4 brings 130 mm front and 120 mm rear travel, where the older platform used 120 mm front and 100 mm rear travel. It also adds the 800 Wh-capable RIB 2.0 battery arrangement, updated Bosch CX integration, more trail-focused geometry, greater dropper-post insertion and additional accessory-mount provision.

For anyone weighing up older stock or a used bike, those are platform changes worth recognising. A legacy Powerfly FS should not be treated as the same proposition simply because its name is similar: older 625 Wh battery systems, suspension figures and geometry do not describe the current Gen 4 Powerfly FS+ 5.
