The latest Charter+ 4 range remains one current platform, with Lowstep and conventional-frame options grouped under the same model name. R9 is available only as a Lowstep build, while selected Nexus 5 Belt builds use a conventional step-over frame as well as Lowstep. Enviolo Belt is Lowstep-only. The Trek Charter+ 4 Trail is a separately named, Trail-oriented model, rather than another Charter+ 4 specification.

Frame, comfort, sizing and everyday ride character

Broken tarmac, pothole edges and bumpy cycle paths are exactly where this bike's comfort kit earns its keep. A 63 mm SR Suntour coil fork, 27.5 x 2.40 in tyres and a suspension seatpost work together to soften the frequent little jolts that can make a longer commute feel wearing. The adjustable cockpit also supports a naturally upright riding position, with scope to move towards a slightly more active stance.

The R9 is the value-led choice, using a Shimano CUES nine-speed derailleur, chain and 11-46T cassette. It offers the widest familiar selection of conventional gears and straightforward derailleur servicing, which will suit riders happy to keep a chain clean and lubricated.

Nexus 5 Belt models replace the derailleur with a five-speed Shimano Nexus internal gear hub and Gates belt. The belt keeps the drive system cleaner and reduces routine chain care, particularly welcome after wet winter commuting. Being able to select a gear while stationary is handy in stop-start traffic, although the five-speed arrangement is about simplicity rather than the R9's wider spread of ratios.

Enviolo Belt versions use a manually controlled Enviolo City continuously variable hub and Gates belt. Twist the controller to find the ratio that feels right rather than shifting through fixed steps. It is the most refined option for relaxed urban riding, but comes at a higher original UK RRP and adds hub weight.

Battery choice is just as important. A 540 Wh PowerTube suits predictable daily distances when charging is convenient. The 800 Wh option gives more range margin and can reduce charging frequency, which is useful for longer leisure rides or regular journeys with luggage. Actual distance between charges still depends on assistance level, gradients, temperature, rider weight and cargo.

UK commuting, maintenance and ownership

Mudguards, a rear rack, front and rear lights, and a kickstand are fitted across the current range, so the Charter+ 4 arrives much closer to useful everyday transport than a bare hybrid. The combined bicycle, rider and cargo limit is 136 kg / 300 lb. For regular shopping, work kit and local errands, that complete package can make replacing short car trips feel properly achievable.

This is a substantial e-bike, not one for regularly carrying up several flights of stairs. R9 owners should expect normal chain and derailleur cleaning. Nexus and Enviolo belt systems reduce exposed-drivetrain mess, but hub adjustment, belt tension and drivetrain-specific rear-wheel work are best handled by a workshop familiar with belt-driven Bosch e-bikes.
