Trek Powerfly+ 6

Want the extra shove for longer woodland loops, steep bridleway climbs and rougher everyday journeys, without the cost and moving parts of rear suspension? The Trek Powerfly+ 6 is the middle Powerfly+ hardtail, pairing a large Bosch battery with useful trail equipment in an aluminium frame. It makes particular sense for riders who want to stay out longer, carry kit for a day away from home, or turn a hilly route from a slog into a regular ride.

It is a hardtail, with suspension at the front and no rear shock. That keeps pedalling direct and ownership simpler than on a full-suspension e-MTB, while the four-piston brakes and dropper post give you helpful control on forest tracks and moderate singletrack. The limit arrives on repeatedly rocky, rooty or steep technical trails, where the rigid rear end and recreational-grade fork pass on more impacts and ask more of your arms and legs.

Gen 5 platform, with two distinct component packages

Gen 5 is the newest UK Powerfly+ 6 platform. Some retailer listings use a year label such as 2027, but that is not a different frame generation. The useful identifiers are the Gen 5 frame and the actual component list.

Two Gen 5 packages share the same core hardtail layout, Bosch drive system and size-specific wheel format, but they are not identical bikes dressed in different colours. The newer package has 2.40-inch Gunnison Elite XR tyres on Kovee Tubeless-Ready rims, Deore M6200 shifting with an XT M8200 derailleur, FSA cranks and a TranzX dropper. Its cassette may be either a SunRace 11-51 or Shimano XT 10-51. The earlier package uses wider 2.60-inch Gunnison Pro XR tyres on Line TLR 30 rims, Deore M6100 shifting with an XT M8100 derailleur, e*thirteen cranks and a Bontrager Line dropper.

For most riders, the tyre and dropper differences will be more noticeable than the model-year label. The earlier package's bigger-volume tyres should bring more cushioning and grip on loose, bumpy paths. The newer 2.40-inch tyres may feel a little quicker to steer and roll, although they offer less pneumatic cushioning. On size M, the newer package has 150 mm of dropper travel, while the earlier one has 170 mm. Both packages had an official UK RRP of £3,400.

Bosch assistance for properly long days out

Both packages use the Bosch Performance Line CX smart system at its confirmed factory setting of 85 Nm, with assistance up to 25 km/h in the UK. Combined with the removable Bosch PowerTube 800 Wh battery, it gives this bike the capacity and climbing support to make longer, hillier routes feel far more achievable. The Purion 200 controller keeps the essentials close to hand, while the RIB 2.0 battery arrangement lets you remove the battery for indoor charging, storage or easier transport. A full charge from empty takes approximately seven hours with the published 4 A setup.

For unusually big days with a lot of climbing, a Bosch PowerMore 250 Wh range extender can be added. It is an optional extra, not part of the standard bike, and needs a 100 mm reversed connection cable plus the applicable mounting hardware. Approved software updates can alter the assistance available on an individual bike, but the factory 85 Nm setting is the dependable figure to use when choosing the Powerfly+ 6. More assistance is handy when a climb turns properly savage, but it also uses more battery energy and increases drivetrain wear.

A calm hardtail with a useful size-specific layout

The Alpha Platinum Aluminium frame has a tapered head tube, guided internal cable routing, Motor Armour and Boost thru axles. On the 29-inch M, L and XL sizes, the longer rear end and 66.5-degree head angle point towards composed climbing and stable handling rather than the twitchy feel of a lightweight cross-country bike. Size S is a genuinely different small-wheel setup, with 27.5-inch wheels, a 65.5-degree head angle, 100 mm of fork travel and a 100 mm dropper. M, L and XL use 29-inch wheels and 120 mm of front travel.

MTB Pro's test of the earlier Gen 5 package described a comfortable, stable and mileage-friendly e-hardtail with strong climbing traction and powerful, manageable braking. That neatly matches its intended role: forest roads, long tracks, moderate trails and mixed-surface exploration. The RockShox Recon Silver RL air fork has a lockout for smoother routes, but it is not trying to turn the Powerfly+ 6 into an enduro bike. Four-piston Shimano braking and a dropper give welcome assurance on moderate descents; sustained rough riding is where a full-suspension e-MTB earns its extra complication.

From weekend trails to weekday journeys

There are mounts for compatible lights, mudguards, a rear rack and a kickstand, so the Powerfly+ 6 can become a capable commuter or light-touring companion as well as a weekend bike. Those parts are not confirmed as supplied, so plan on the accessories and their required fittings separately. The removable battery is especially useful when the bike lives in a shed, hallway or shared storage space without convenient power.

Wet grit is hard on any full-power e-bike. Keep the chain clean and lubricated after muddy rides, and inspect brake pads regularly because the motor assistance and overall mass can wear consumables faster. The fork and dropper also need routine servicing, while a tubeless conversion remains an optional but sensible route for trail use. The wheels and tyres are Tubeless-Ready, but valves, sealant and rim tape where needed are extra parts, and sealant needs periodic attention.

It is worth being realistic about lifting. The Powerfly+ 6 remains a substantial electric hardtail even with the battery removed, and published current size-M weight figures conflict, so there is no single dependable headline figure for carrying it upstairs or loading it onto a high vehicle rack. Remove the battery before lifting where practical, and enjoy the fact that once it is rolling, the Bosch system is there to take the sting out of the next hill.
