Bikesy's Verdict
The Trek Charter+ 5 is a compelling choice for someone ready to make commuting, errands and longer leisure rides far easier and more enjoyable. Its strongest card is not simply the 90 Nm Bosch motor, but the complete package around it: Lowstep access, a genuinely comfortable ride, powerful brakes and the practical kit needed for everyday transport. Choose R10 for familiar manual gearing and a lower starting cost, or choose Auto for the quiet, clean ease of automatic Enviolo shifting and a Gates belt. The 540 Wh battery will suit many regular routines, while 800 Wh is there for longer or less frequently charged journeys. It is a substantial bike, so secure ground-level storage matters, and riders wanting a high-top-tube frame should choose another model.
Pros
- Bosch Performance Line PX assistance with 90 Nm for hills, luggage and frequent starts
- Genuinely useful choice of 540 Wh or 800 Wh battery capacity
- Lowstep frame, adjustable cockpit and suspension package prioritise everyday comfort
- Rack, mudguards, lights and kickstand are fitted for practical daily transport
- R10 chain-drive and Auto belt-drive builds offer clearly different ownership benefits
Cons
- A substantial fully equipped e-bike, so regular stair carrying is impractical
- Auto versions cost more and benefit from Enviolo and belt-drive specialist servicing
- Current Charter+ 5 builds are Lowstep only, with no conventional high-top-tube option
The Trek Charter+ 5 is a proper everyday e-bike for making more journeys by bike, not merely adding a motor to the occasional weekend spin. Its Lowstep frame, fitted rack, mudguards, lights and kickstand suit a work commute with a laptop bag, a supermarket run, or a longer leisure route where hills would otherwise take the shine off the day. It is a substantial premium machine, but one designed to earn its place outside the front door rather than languish in the shed.
Power for daily journeys, with four current choices
The current UK model uses the first-generation Charter+ platform and a Bosch Performance Line PX Smart System motor. It provides 250 W nominal output, 90 Nm of torque and assistance up to 25 km/h. That is useful when you are setting off repeatedly at junctions, carrying shopping or climbing home into a headwind. Bosch power is paired with a Kiox 500 display on every current build.
There are four meaningful versions, not four cosmetic variations. Original UK RRP starts at £4,000 for the R10 540 Wh model. You can choose either a 540 Wh or 800 Wh battery with the R10 mechanical drivetrain or the Auto belt-drive system. The larger battery stores more energy, so it makes sense for long days, frequent hills, heavier assistance use or fewer charging opportunities. For an ordinary commute with convenient charging, the 540 Wh option may be the more sensible spend. No single distance per charge can be promised because assistance setting, route gradients, wind, temperature, tyre pressure, rider mass and luggage all alter consumption.
Lowstep comfort without mountain-bike pretensions
Every current Charter+ 5 is a Lowstep model, making repeated mounting and dismounting far less faff in town. The adjustable cockpit helps you tune the posture towards upright comfort or a slightly more active position. It is available in S, M, L and XL, while riders who specifically want a conventional high top tube should choose a different electric-hybrid model.
Comfort is a central part of the brief. The 80 mm SR Suntour Mobie 34 air fork, suspension seatpost and 27.5 x 2.4-inch tyres take the sting out of patched tarmac, cobbles and rougher cycleways. The handling is set up for secure, predictable progress rather than quick sports-bike reactions. There is no rear suspension, and this is not the bike for technical trails, downhill riding or bike parks.
Four-piston Shimano hydraulic brakes with 180 mm fitted rotors are a welcome match for a loaded, motor-assisted commuter, particularly on wet or hilly routes. They offer stronger stopping control, although sensible speed and tyre grip still matter on slippery roads.
R10 or Auto: choose your ownership style
The R10 models use Shimano CUES U6000 1x10 gearing, an 11-48-tooth LINKGLIDE cassette and a conventional chain. It is the straightforward choice for someone who likes selecting gears manually, wants familiar mechanical servicing and would rather direct more of the budget towards battery capacity, security or luggage. Through a wet winter, the exposed chain and derailleur will need regular cleaning, lubrication and adjustment.
Auto models pair an Enviolo Trekking AUTOMATiQ stepless internal hub with a Gates CDX belt drive. Rather than clicking through individual gears, the system manages the ratio around your chosen cadence. It is a particularly appealing setup for stop-start journeys: you can focus on filtering into a cycle lane or getting away neatly from the lights instead of thinking about the next shift. The belt is quiet and clean, without chain lubrication, though the Auto builds cost more and are best maintained by a workshop familiar with electronic Enviolo hub systems and belt setup.
Battery choice remains separate from drivetrain choice. Moving from 540 Wh to 800 Wh costs £400 within either the R10 or Auto family. Choose the extra capacity because it suits your real routine, not simply because the largest number is available.
Ready for commuting, with a little ownership planning
The rear rack, mudguards, front and rear lights, kickstand and pedals are already fitted, so the Charter+ 5 arrives prepared for daily transport rather than asking for a shopping list of basic commuter kit. The rack is well suited to normal work bags and shopping, but no rack load rating is published for the current UK model, so it should not be treated as a cargo-bike platform for unusually heavy loads.
This is a heavy, fully equipped e-bike rather than a lightweight urban runabout. Regular stairs, wall hooks and lifting it on and off train platforms will be less pleasant than rolling it from secure ground-level storage. The removable battery can reduce what you carry in one go, but it does not turn the bike into an easy shoulder lift.
Its comfort equipment brings useful upkeep alongside the benefits. Keep the suspension fork and seatpost in good order, maintain the hydraulic brakes, and allow for periodic e-bike diagnostics. The rims are Tubeless Ready, but the factory tyres should not be assumed to be supplied tubeless. A conversion needs suitable tubeless tyres, valves, rim tape and sealant. The adjustable stem is Blendr compatible, allowing a tidy phone, light or computer mount when fitted with the correct Blendr base and device mount.
Key Features & Benefits
- Bosch Performance Line PX Smart System: The 250 W, 90 Nm motor supports brisk getaways and sustained climbing without the abrupt feel that can make urban riding tiring. Kiox 500 display hardware is fitted across the range.
- Air fork, suspension seatpost and 2.4-inch tyres: This three-part comfort package reduces the jolts from potholes, cobbles and worn cycle paths while retaining the straightforward hardtail layout for daily use.
- Two distinct transmission families: R10 gives the lower-cost, conventional Shimano CUES 1x10 route with manual control. Auto uses Enviolo AUTOMATiQ and a Gates CDX belt for a cleaner, quieter ride with no chain lubrication.
- Battery capacity matched to your routine: The 540 Wh models suit riders who can charge regularly, while 800 Wh versions add useful energy capacity for longer, hillier or less frequently charged journeys.
- Transport-ready equipment: Integrated luggage, weather protection, lighting and a kickstand help turn regular car trips into practical rides for work, errands and leisure.

Alternatives to the Charter+ 5
The Gazelle Ultimate C380 is a close alternative for riders drawn to a premium Enviolo belt-drive commuter. It offers low-step and high-step frame choices, plus battery options up to 800 Wh. The Charter+ 5 Auto is Lowstep only, but adds automatic shifting and publishes 90 Nm of motor torque, against 85 Nm for the current Gazelle range summary. Gazelle's stepless system gives manual control of the ratio, while Trek's Auto system manages shifts around the chosen cadence.
The Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 is a full-power derailleur-equipped alternative with a 710 Wh battery. Its battery sits between the Charter+ 5 R10's 540 Wh and 800 Wh options, whereas Trek lets you choose the lower-cost capacity or prioritise greater energy storage within the same Shimano CUES drivetrain family.
Independent ride report
In a GoRide test of the Charter+ 5 Auto 800 Wh Lowstep, Nuno Margaça found the Bosch assistance progressive and natural rather than abrupt. The automatic Enviolo system quickly removed the need to think about shifting, while the Gates belt was notably quiet and clean. The reviewer described the bike as predictable and stable around town, but also highlighted its roughly 31 kg observed weight and premium price. For a buyer weighing up R10 against Auto, that supports the case for Auto as a relaxed daily-transport setup rather than a lightweight option.

Published bike weights do not use consistent size or test-condition contexts, so they are not a dependable guide to how easy a particular build will be to lift. For replacement front wheels or forks, match the parts to the front axle interface on the exact bike because that interface is not published consistently.
