The Trek Powerfly Sport 5 is the practical sort of e-bike that can replace a soggy car commute on Monday, carry you along a towpath on Wednesday and head for a forest loop at the weekend. Its full UK name is the Powerfly Sport 5 Equipped Gen 4. A Bosch-powered aluminium hardtail, it combines a 625 Wh removable battery with a rack, full-length mudguards, battery-powered lights and a kickstand straight from the factory.

It is no longer in Trek's current UK catalogue, so the relevant bike is the 2024 Powerfly Sport 5 Equipped Gen 4 found as remaining new-old-stock, ex-display or used. The supplied utility kit is central to its appeal. A listing without the rack, mudguards, lights and kickstand is not necessarily this Equipped specification.

The Powerfly Sport 5 makes most sense for someone who wants one capable electric bike rather than separate commuter and leisure machines. The Bosch Performance Line CX motor supplies 85 Nm of assistance for long climbs, headwinds and a loaded rack, while the 1 x 12 Shimano transmission has a wide 10-51-tooth cassette for spinning a sensible gear uphill. Assistance works only while you pedal and cuts out at 15.5 mph for UK road use.

Its published weight is 24.45 kg, although no reference size is stated. That is normal e-bike heft rather than something you will relish carrying up several flights of stairs. The tool-free battery removal helps with indoor charging, security and lifting, but anyone transporting the complete bike should use a vehicle rack rated for both its weight and tyre width.

The last UK-listed version is the 2024 Powerfly Sport 5 Equipped Gen 4. Gen 4 identifies the Powerfly hardtail frame generation, while 2024 is the official model year. There is no separate bare Powerfly Sport 5 specification to treat as an alternative current build here: the applicable bike is the fully equipped version with the Bosch smart system, LED Remote and Intuvia 100 display.

For everyday riding, the removable 625 Wh PowerTube battery is a genuinely handy arrangement. It sits protected inside the frame yet comes out without tools, so charging does not have to happen wherever the bike is parked. It also gives the bike a clean route to work without turning every purchase into an accessory project.

Powerfly Gen 4 frame, sizing and ride character

Trek sensibly matched the wheel format to frame size. XS and S use 27.5-inch wheels, compact proportions and a curved top tube, while M, L and XL use 29-inch wheels. That means smaller riders are not asked to manage an oversized wheel, while the larger sizes gain the easier rolling feel of the bigger format. Tyres are 2.40 inches wide across the range, with wheel diameter and mudguards matched to the frame size.

A 100 mm SR Suntour Zeron 35 air fork and wide tyres should take the sting out of patched tarmac, gravelly paths and moderate trail chatter. The hardtail layout also keeps progress efficient on firmer routes, particularly when the fork is locked out. Four-piston Shimano brakes are a welcome match for controlling a loaded, heavy e-bike in rain and on descents.

Keep the bike's job description in view. It is at home on forest roads, bridleways and moderate singletrack, where the motor and fork make getting out for an evening ride far less faff. A rigid seatpost, 100 mm of front travel and no rear suspension mean steep, very rough downhill tracks, large impacts and bike-park riding are beyond its intended brief. Above the assistance limit, or with the system switched off, the weight will be much more apparent than on an unassisted hardtail.

UK commuting, trail maintenance and ownership

For a wet-weather commuter, the fitted mudguards, lights, rack and kickstand are more useful than glamorous. They make it easier to carry work kit or light shopping and leave the bike standing neatly outside a café or office. The rack's load rating is not published, so there is no stated cargo figure to plan around. A total rider-and-load weight limit is not published either.

Gritty roads and muddy paths reward a little routine care. Clean and lubricate the chain, cassette and derailleur regularly, ease pedal pressure when shifting under motor load, and inspect the rack, mudguard, kickstand and light fasteners during normal servicing. Keep the fork stanchions clean and avoid pressure-washing electrical parts, bearings and suspension seals.

There is useful scope to tailor the bike without pretending it is something else. The frame has internal routing for a 31.6 mm dropper post, so fitting a compatible post, remote, cable and housing can make frequent trail riding and mounting easier. The Bontrager Kovee rims are Tubeless-Ready, but the fitted wire-bead tyres do not make a complete tubeless system: compatible tubeless tyres, valves, sealant and possibly rim tape are needed.

Battery capacity is the firmer limit. The Gen 4 frame cannot accept the longer Bosch 750 Wh battery. A compatible 625 Wh replacement is possible, and a supported 500 Wh battery can be used with the correct spacer, but riders who want substantially more integrated capacity should favour a newer 800 Wh bike from the outset.
