Specialized Turbo Levo R Expert

Specialized Turbo Levo R Expert

The Specialized Turbo Levo R Expert is a carbon full-power eMTB with 140/130 mm of travel, a fitted 840 Wh battery and agile trail handling rather than enduro travel.

  • 840 Wh battery: Long loops from the pack that is actually fitted
  • 3.1 motor: 105 Nm and 810 W peak when the climb gets steep and technical
  • 140/130 mm travel: Quick direction changes from a full-power eMTB
  • FACT 11m frame: Carbon chassis with tool storage in the downtube
  • GX Eagle AXS: Wireless 12-speed shifting across a 10-52t cassette
  • Roval carbon wheels: Less rotating mass when you accelerate or change line

Bikesy's Verdict

Riders who want full-power climbing without an enduro bike's manners have a strong case in the Specialized Turbo Levo R Expert. The 3.1 motor's 810 W and 105 Nm, with the fitted 840 Wh pack, make long climbing days the easy part of the week. FACT 11m carbon, FOX Performance Elite suspension, GX Eagle AXS and Roval carbon wheels come fitted, so this is the finished Expert rather than a chassis you have to complete. It will not match a longer-travel bike on repeated hard landings, and wet roots ask more of the stock Purgatory tyres than a dry flow trail does. For fast singletrack and after-work laps, that short-travel package is a genuinely exciting bike to own.

Pros

  • Fitted 840 Wh battery, with a lighter 600 Wh option when a shorter ride matters more than capacity.
  • Specialized 3.1 motor rated at 810 W peak and 105 Nm for steep, technical climbs.
  • 140/130 mm carbon chassis that stays reactive on flow trails and tight climbs.
  • FOX Performance Elite suspension, GX Eagle AXS and Roval carbon wheels fitted as standard.
  • MasterMind display with app tuning, SWAT storage and Apple Find My built in.

Cons

  • 130 mm of rear travel has less reserve on repeated hard impacts than a long-travel eMTB.
  • Stock Purgatory tyres can lose grip on wet roots and rocks; a burlier front tyre is the usual fix.
  • At 21.76 kg in S3, this is full-power weight, not a lightweight eMTB.

You want a full-power eMTB that still changes direction like a trail bike. The Specialized Turbo Levo R Expert is the electric downcountry take on a full-power Levo: FACT 11m carbon, 140 mm at the front, 130 mm at the rear, 29-inch wheels and an 840 Wh battery, so a long loop is a normal ride rather than a battery-watching exercise.

It suits active riders who like fast woodland singletrack, flow trails, technical climbs and after-work laps, and who want trail feedback more than maximum downhill stability. Intermediate and advanced riders will get the most from the direct steering. Those same lively manners keep an evening loop feeling keen.

Which Expert you are actually buying

This is the current UK model. The official UK RRP is £7,999 for a single FACT 11m carbon Expert build, placed between the Levo R Comp and the Levo R Pro. That price puts GX Eagle AXS, Roval carbon wheels and FOX Performance Elite suspension on the bike, rather than leaving you a frame to finish later.

Colourways do not change the specification. The older Turbo Levo Expert is a different model. The Turbo Levo 4 Expert is the longer-travel bike in the wider family, and a shared Expert name does not mean a shared chassis.

Power, travel and how it handles

The frame is FACT 11m carbon. A FOX 36 SL Performance Elite fork with GRIP X supplies the 140 mm, and a FOX FLOAT Performance Elite GENIE shock, 190x45 mm, supplies the 130 mm. On flow trails you get a bike that still pops off a roller and changes line, which is the point of short travel under a full-power motor.

Climbing help comes from the Specialized 3.1 motor, rated at 810 W peak and 105 Nm. You adjust it on the 2.2-inch MasterMind TCU and in the Specialized app. It is full-power assistance for steep, technical climbs, not a lightweight system that fades into the background on the flat. The battery in the downtube is the Turbo X2 at 840 Wh, with side-entry access, and that capacity covers a long XC-style loop or several after-work laps.

Berno tested this exact Expert build in S4 for bike-components. He found confident climbing traction and easy handling in tight switchbacks, with a direct feel. On fast, rough descents the shorter travel had less reserve, and the tyres reached their limit first.

Geometry is adjustable, so you can tune balance, cornering and ground clearance instead of living with one setting. The published baseline, before those adjustments, is a 65 degree head angle, a 77 degree seat angle and 447 mm chainstays on S2, S3, S4, S5 and S6. Reach runs from 420 mm to 525 mm. Move the adjustment and those published numbers can change. S-Sizing is about how agile or stable you want the bike, not a straight swap for small, medium or large. UK sizes are S2 to S6, each on 29-inch wheels.

Battery choices, tyres and upkeep

A Specialized 4 amp charger comes with the bike. The 840 Wh pack is the one to keep for long days. An optional 600 Wh battery can replace it and lowers system weight by approximately 1.2 kg, which suits shorter rides where saving weight beats extra capacity. The 280 Wh bottle-cage extender is a separate purchase. It adds range for a bigger day, and it can also be used on its own as a lighter short-ride setup.

Roval Traverse SL II wheels use hookless carbon rims, 30 mm internal, on Industry Nine 1/1 hubs. The rims are tubeless-ready, but inner tubes are fitted, so this is not a tubeless bike out of the box. Valves, sealant and compatible tyres are the conversion, and they let you run lower pressures. Stock tyres are Specialized Purgatory 29x2.4, GRID T9 front and GRID Trail T7 rear, which suits the fast character. On wet roots and rocks they can lose grip early, and a burlier front tyre is the change that helps.

SRAM Motive Bronze brakes, four-piston, use 200 mm rotors front and rear. For the trail riding this bike is aimed at, that is a solid setup. Heavier riders, and anyone who brakes late on long steep pitches, may want higher-bite pads or a compatible brake upgrade later. Plenty of riders will be happy with them as fitted.

GX Eagle AXS Transmission handles the gears, 12-speed with a 10-52t cassette. Wireless shifts are what you notice on a steep, stop-start climb, when the motor is working and you want the next ratio without thinking about a cable. There is a derailleur battery to keep charged. The rear dropout is 12x148 mm and UDH-compatible, so the hanger is a widely supported replaceable part.

SWAT storage in the downtube will take a tube and a multi-tool, which beats a pack slapping your back on a short loop. Apple Find My is integrated with the MasterMind display, a useful extra if the bike is left at a trailhead. Claimed weight is 21.76 kg (47 lb, 15.6 oz) for an S3. It varies with size, colour and component variation, and it is still full-power weight rather than a lightweight eMTB.

Pick the Expert when you want this short-travel Levo R with the carbon wheels and electronic shifting already fitted, and your week looks like woodland loops, flow trails and technical climbs. The motor and the fitted battery make the climbing straightforward. You still get a bike that turns quickly, which is what 140 mm and 130 mm are doing under all that assistance.

Key Features & Benefits

  • FOX 36 SL and GENIE shock: 140 mm of FOX 36 SL Performance Elite with GRIP X, over a FOX FLOAT Performance Elite GENIE shock at 130 mm. The ride stays responsive on flow trails, with support building as the shock moves deeper in its stroke.
  • 840 Wh, or a lighter pack: The Turbo X2 840 Wh battery is fitted, and the side-entry design lets you take it out. An optional 600 Wh pack can replace it and saves approximately 1.2 kg. A separate 280 Wh bottle-cage extender can top up a long day or run alone for a lighter short ride.
  • Expert wheels and wireless gears: Roval Traverse SL II hookless carbon rims, 30 mm internal, sit on Industry Nine 1/1 hubs and keep rotating mass down. GX Eagle AXS Transmission is the wireless, eMTB-specific drivetrain, 12-speed with a 10-52t cassette. Both are on the bike, not a shopping list for later.
  • Adjustable geometry and S-Sizing: Balance, cornering and ground clearance can be adjusted, so the published 65 degree head angle and 77 degree seat angle are a baseline. Reach runs from 420 mm on S2 to 525 mm on S6. Where two sizes could fit, the smaller favours a livelier bike and the larger favours stability.

Geometry

Alternatives to Consider

The Specialized Turbo Levo 4 Expert shares the 810 W, 105 Nm motor and the 840 Wh battery, so motor output and battery capacity are not the split. Travel is. The Levo 4 runs 160 mm at the front and 150 mm at the rear, for stability and more reserve on fast, rough descents. The Levo R Expert stays at 140/130 mm with 29-inch wheels, for a more agile ride on flow trails and tight climbs.

The Santa Cruz Vala GX AXS takes another path: a Bosch system, a 600 Wh battery, mixed wheels and 150 mm of rear travel. It suits rougher trails, where that extra rear travel is the point. The Levo R Expert answers with reactive XC-style handling and a larger standard battery, 840 Wh rather than 600 Wh.

Independent ride tests

Berno rode the Turbo Levo R Expert in S4 for bike-components, so this is the same build rather than a higher spec. The bike felt lighter, more direct and more playful than the Levo 4, with confident climbing traction and easy handling in tight switchbacks. Fast, rough descents showed less reserve in the shorter travel, and the stock tyres reached their limit first. That test was positive about the Motive Bronze brakes, while noting that heavier or more aggressive riders may still prefer stronger pads or brakes.

Dario DiGiulio tested an S-Works Turbo Levo R in S5 for Pinkbike. The suspension and chassis behaviour are shared with this Expert; the parts kit is not. GENIE gave more descending support than the 130 mm figure suggests, supple at the start and more supportive near the end of the stroke. Cornering felt balanced and intuitive. The same ride still put the bike below longer-travel rivals once the descents got fast and rough.
