Bikesy's Verdict

The Specialized Turbo Kenevo SL 2 Comp makes most sense for riders who want enduro travel and a compact motor rather than a full-power e-MTB. Its SL 1.2 system supplies 50Nm and 320W of assistance, the FACT 11m carbon 29er runs 170mm of travel at both ends, and the Comp kit puts wireless Eagle Transmission, Maven Bronze brakes and GRID GRAVITY tyres on a bike meant for steep, demanding descents. Six geometry settings let you bias stability or sharper steering. A 320Wh battery that charges in the frame will feel tight on long, high-assist days unless you add the bottle-mounted 160Wh extender. For confident intermediate and expert riders who value that descending focus, it is a strong bike to own.

Pros

  • Compact 50Nm SL 1.2 motor that helps on climbs without taking over the ride
  • 170mm full-29er carbon chassis set up for aggressive descending
  • Three head angles and 7mm of bottom-bracket shift for handling changes
  • Wireless SRAM S1000 Eagle Transmission with a wide 10-52t cassette
  • Maven Bronze brakes and GRID GRAVITY tyres suited to long, steep descents

Cons

  • The 320Wh main battery is modest for long or high-assist days; the 160Wh extender helps but takes the bottle cage
  • The main battery stays in the frame, so you charge the bike rather than lifting a pack off it
  • Seatpost insertion can limit sizing up for extra stability, which shorter-legged riders will notice as a higher saddle

The Specialized Turbo Kenevo SL 2 Comp is a full-carbon e-enduro bike with 170mm of travel and a compact motor, not a full-power shuttle. You still put the work in on climbs, but the SL 1.2 system takes the edge off the steepest pitches so you arrive at the top ready to use the long-travel 29er chassis. It is the Comp entry point below the Specialized Turbo Kenevo SL 2 Expert. Use it for steep technical trails, enduro laps without an uplift and rough bike-park runs where e-bikes are allowed, not for gentle trail-centre loops.

This is the current UK model. The 2025 Turbo Kenevo SL 2 Comp has an original RRP of £5,999. Identify it by RockShox suspension, SRAM S1000 Eagle Transmission and Maven Bronze brakes so older 2023 Comp stock does not get mixed in.

SL assistance and the kit on this Comp

Specialized's SL 1.2 motor produces 50Nm of torque and 320W. It will not winch you up a climb the way a full-power e-MTB would. What you get instead is enough support to keep moving on technical trails, with a ride feel closer to a normal enduro bike. MasterMind TCU brings MicroTune, a handlebar remote, ANT+/Bluetooth and over-the-air updates, so small assistance changes happen from the bar.

SRAM's S1000 Eagle Transmission is wireless 12-speed, with an XS-1270 10-52t cassette and an AXS Pod Controller. Maven Bronze brakes use a 220mm front rotor and a 200mm rear rotor, which is proper hardware for long descents. Butcher GRID GRAVITY tyres in GRIPTON T9, 29x2.3in front and rear, favour grip and a tough casing over easy rolling, so they cost a bit of speed on smoother trails.

Chassis, geometry and S-Sizing

A FACT 11m full-carbon frame carries 170mm of rear travel, with a RockShox ZEB Select fork matching that 170mm at the front. 29-inch wheels sit at both ends. The layout is there for steep, rough descents and enduro-style riding rather than saving effort on smoother singletrack. MBR's testers found the shared Kenevo SL chassis mixed high-speed stability with useful agility.

Six settings give a 62.5°, 63.5° or 64.5° head angle and 7mm of bottom-bracket adjustment. Slack and low calms the front end on steep, fast tracks. Steeper and higher quickens steering and helps pedal clearance when you are still climbing.

S-Sizing runs from S2 to S5, and the sizes overlap on purpose. A smaller frame feels more agile; a larger one is roomier and more stable. Reach stretches from 435mm on S2 to 510mm on S5. Seatpost insertion is tighter than the size range suggests, so sizing up for stability can leave more saddle height than you want, especially with shorter legs.

Battery, charging and tubeless setup

The integrated SL1-320 battery is 320Wh and is not designed for routine removal, so charging happens on the bike. That pack fits shorter, harder rides better than all-day high-assist missions, particularly in cold weather. A separately sold 160Wh Specialized SL range extender lifts nominal capacity to 480Wh and uses the bottle-cage position.

Hookless alloy rims from Specialized are 30mm internal and tubeless ready, matching the 2Bliss Ready tyres, though inner tubes are fitted as supplied. Going tubeless means buying valves, sealant and the usual consumables. Claimed weight is 20.13kg for size S4. A SWAT CC steerer tool, with a chain tool and spare link, sits in the steerer.

Changes from the 2023 Comp

The 2023 Turbo Kenevo SL 2 Comp shared this generation of chassis but not the current parts. It ran FOX 38 Rhythm and FLOAT X suspension, mechanical GX Eagle, Code R brakes and lighter trail-casing tyres, with a £6,500 RRP and a 19.27kg claimed weight. Today's Comp switches to RockShox, wireless Transmission, Maven Bronze and gravity-casing tyres.

Choose it when steep, technical riding is the reason you want an e-MTB. The carbon chassis, adjustable geometry and Comp kit reward that kind of day, and they will feel wasted on gentle loops or all-day high-assist touring.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Specialized SL 1.2 motor: Helps on steep climbs while keeping the motor in the background compared with a full-power e-MTB.
  • 170mm FACT 11m carbon 29er: RockShox ZEB Select and Super Deluxe Select suspension, with 29-inch wheels at both ends, keep the bike composed when descents get steep and broken.
  • Adjustable geometry: Three head angles and a 7mm bottom-bracket shift let you slack the steering for fast descents or steepen it for quicker turn-in and more pedal clearance.
  • 320Wh battery and optional extender: The integrated pack suits shorter, harder rides. A separately sold 160Wh SL extender raises nominal capacity to 480Wh if you give up the bottle cage.
  • SRAM Maven Bronze and Eagle Transmission: Wireless 12-speed shifting and 220mm/200mm rotors are kit you notice on long descents, matched to GRID GRAVITY tyres that put grip and casing strength ahead of easy rolling.

Alternatives to Consider

The Specialized Turbo Levo SL 2 Comp uses the same 50Nm, 320W SL 1.2 motor, 320Wh battery, Eagle Transmission and Maven Bronze brakes. Its mixed-wheel layout with 150mm rear and 160mm front travel is the more versatile trail-focused option. The Kenevo SL 2 Comp stays a full 29er with 170mm at both ends when descending stability is the priority.

The Mondraker Dune R is a carbon light-e-enduro rival with 165mm of rear travel, mullet wheels and Bosch SX assistance. Its 400Wh battery is larger than the Kenevo's 320Wh pack. MBR preferred the Dune platform for sizing, power, range and dynamic handling.

Reviews

MBR tested the S-Works Turbo Kenevo SL on the original chassis retained for Kenevo SL 2. The test team found a notably effective blend of high-speed stability and agility. They also reported that limited dropper insertion reduced the sizing freedom S-Sizing appears to offer, and that the internal battery was not easy to remove.
