Specialized Turbo Como SL 5.0

The Specialized Turbo Como SL 5.0 is for people who want an upright e-bike for town riding, commuting, shopping and general utility, without the weight and shove of a full-power city machine. You get a mixte step-through, Specialized's SL 1.1 motor and a complete utility build, so the bike is ready for errands rather than waiting on extra racks and lights.

You sit upright and step through the mixte frame rather than swinging a leg over a high top tube. A Gates CDX belt and Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub keep oil off your clothes in wet weather, and the motor controls stay simple if you are new to e-bikes.

The 2022 5.0 build

This original Turbo Como SL platform launched in 2022 as one E5 aluminium mixte build in S, M and L, at an original UK RRP of £4,250.00. It is the latest official UK version, and Specialized no longer includes it in the current Turbo Como catalogue. This 5.0 is not the full-power Turbo Como 5.0 IGH, and the Como SL 4.0 is a separate lower-spec SL bike rather than another 5.0.

Used and remaining-stock bikes still circulate, so asking prices are best judged against that £4,250.00 original RRP. The fork-steerer stop-ride recall, and the chain-guard notice on affected internal-gear bikes, should already be documented before you ride.

Frame, motor and everyday kit

An E5 aluminium mixte frame houses the 320Wh battery and uses internal cable routing, so the step-through stays uncluttered even with a basket up front. The SL 1.1 motor peaks at 240W, 35Nm and 180% rider amplification. It helps on town miles, but it will not match a full-power system on long steep climbs. Claimed Eco range is up to 62 miles (100 km) or 4.5 hours. Specialized's optional SL Range Extender takes that Eco claim to 93 miles (150 km) or 6.75 hours.

The riding position is upright and relaxed, and the mixte frame is easier to mount than a high-step commuter while remaining stiffer than a deep-wave cruiser. High-volume 650B x 2.3 tyres supply grip, reflectivity and some cushioning over the rigid one-piece aluminium fork. Court Rye at ElectricBikeReview found that rigid fork and stem transmitted more rough-road vibration than suspended alternatives, so a compatible suspension seatpost is the practical comfort extra on broken streets.

A frame-mounted front rack and basket with cargo net are rated to 15kg, and the alloy rear rack is pannier-compatible to 20kg rather than a child-seat mount. Supernova Mini2 235lm and E3 lights, 65mm DRYTECH mudguards, a kickstand, bell and pedals come fitted. TRP Flow Set hydraulic discs with 160mm Center Lock rotors handle the braking, and the Turbo Connect Display plus TCU adds ANT+ and Bluetooth so you can see ride data without bolting on a separate computer.

Belt drive, charging and recalls

The 5.0 uses a Shimano Alfine SG-S7001-8 hub and a Gates CDX belt with 46T/22T rings. You can change gear at a standstill, which helps at junctions, but the shift is cleaner if you briefly ease pedal pressure, especially on climbs. A belt stays quieter than a chain and does not need the same degreasing after winter roads.

Indoor charging takes a little more thought than on a removable-battery commuter. The main pack is not designed for routine rider removal, so you'll need a secure place to store and charge the complete bike. That can be awkward in a flat or anywhere without a nearby socket.

All Turbo Como SL bikes, every 4.0 and 5.0 year, colour and size, are covered by the 2026 fork-steerer stop-ride recall with a free authorised-dealer replacement. This internal-gear 5.0 may also fall under the 2025 chain-guard recall for affected bikes sold from 2021 to 2024. Do not ride an unrestored example; documented completion of the applicable work is the difference between a useful used buy and an unsafe one.

Weekday commutes, shopping trips and moderate-distance utility rides are where the Specialized Turbo Como SL 5.0 makes most sense. Easy mixte access, a quiet belt, fitted cargo kit and SL assistance add up to an electric cruiser that is practical to own and more manageable to park than a bulky full-power city bike.
