Orbea Orca Aero

Orbea Orca Aero

In the past, there hasn't been much improvement when merely taking the three design aspects of aerodynamics, stiffness, and weight into account. Large improvements in one area always put one or both of the others at risk. Finding the right balance between these aims and developing extra performance elements that enable the rider to maximise efficiency are crucial for creating the greatest aero road bike.

The feeling of power that comes from a great aero bike is difficult to match. What rider has mixed feelings about a machine that is made to return free watts? Is there a rival who doesn't take advantage of every speed advantage? Along with the determination to give it their all, every day, without hesitation, Orca Aero delivers these rewards. Try one and be amazed.

Orbea, a Basque company, started making bicycles in 1930 and debuted at the Tour de France in 1934. Since then, it has been a well-known name in performance cycling with an increasing popularity in the UK in recent years, thanks to their continued wins in the big races.

This Orca Aero frameset is advertised as having "better ergonomics" and being the ideal combination of weight, rigidity, and aerodynamics, all of which are vitally important when it comes to finding extra watts when it counts.

Compared to the standard Orbea Orca frame, the Aero sports horizontal top tubes and chainstays, which according to Orbea increase airflow, and a revised fork that reduces turbulence and drag.

The new Orca Aero is more adaptable than its predecessor thanks to the down tube and seat tube profile that have been aerodynamically optimised for 25-28mm tyres, letting you get all the benefits of running wider tyres.

By lining up the upper seat tube junction with the airflow, the drag around the rear wheel has been minimised, and the new aero handlebar, stem, and 50mm carbon seatpost also contribute to the 2% reduction in drag, which, according to Orbea, the combination of all of these aerodynamic advancements reduces drag by 15W at 40 km/h or 28W at 50 km/h. Where else are you likely to get these types of gains so easily?

The bike's new shorter wheelbase makes it more responsive, and the shorter chainstays result in quicker acceleration. The frame weighs 1150g, and the manufacturer claims it to be "one of the most efficient, fastest aero frames on the market."

The integrated toolbox and aero bottle and cage on the new Orca Aero are all removable to suit personal preferences, but Orbea claims the bike is faster with both in situ, although it must be remembered that in UCI sanctioned events the toolkit is not UCI-compliant, so you'll. have to remove it prior to competing.
