Bikesy's Verdict
The Whyte E-180 S V5 is a convincing way into full-power gravity riding without paying for the range-topping builds. It suits confident riders who want Bosch-assisted access to repeated enduro and bike-park descents, and it arrives with the right tools for that job: 180mm/170mm travel, a 750Wh battery, wireless AXS shifting, grippy tyres and big rotors. The trade-off is honest and obvious: 26.4kg of bike that needs lifting, servicing and careful range planning, with no extender option. If you want a light, efficient trail e-bike, look elsewhere. If you want more descents per day and can live with the mass, this is a genuinely satisfying purchase at its official £4,499 price.
Pros
- Full-power Bosch motor paired with a 750Wh battery for repeated assisted climbs and long gravity days
- 180mm front and 170mm rear travel with a slack, adjustable geometry for steep descents
- Wireless SRAM GX Eagle AXS shifting at the entry point of the E-180 range
- High-grip MaxxGrip tyres, DoubleDown rear casing and 220mm/200mm rotors ready for rough conditions
- Shape. It high/low link lets you choose between pedal clearance and a lower, slacker stance
Cons
- 26.4kg in Medium makes lifting, loading and storage a deliberate task
- No Bosch PowerMore range-extender compatibility, so range planning rests entirely on the 750Wh battery
- No size below Medium, with published height guidance starting at 168cm
The Whyte E-180 S is a full-power electric mountain bike built around one idea: getting you to the top of the descent as many times as your legs and battery allow. It is Whyte's most affordable E-180, yet it still carries the full 180mm fork, 170mm rear suspension and Bosch Smart System hardware that define the platform. The reference here is the current V5/MY24 build, and the same model name also covers earlier builds that still turn up in shops.
If your riding revolves around self-shuttled enduro tracks, bike-park laps without an uplift and big days out on steep ground, the E-180 S is aimed squarely at you. It is not a light trail bike, a commuter or a mellow cross-country machine. It is a descending-first gravity bike with a motor, and it makes no apologies for the weight that comes with that job.
Whyte E-180 S prices and UK offers
The current official UK price for the V5 build is £4,499. Retailer stock and discounts shift constantly, so Bikesy compares live offers rather than pointing at a fixed cheapest deal. One practical note: some shops label the same V5 bike as 2024 while others call it 2025. The year badge matters less than the actual parts list. If an offer looks unusually cheap, check that it really is the V5 build with wireless GX Eagle AXS shifting, 155mm cranks and the current RockShox ZEB package before comparing prices.
Which Whyte E-180 S is the latest version?
The current UK build is the V5, officially a MY24 model, on Whyte's E-180 MX Shape. It aluminium platform. It sits below the E-180 RSX and Works in the range, which makes it the value-focused way into the same chassis, and it comes in a matt olive or matt black finish. Power comes from the Bosch Performance Line CX Smart System motor with 85Nm of torque and 600W peak output, backed by a removable 750Wh battery inside the down tube. That combination is the heart of the bike's self-shuttle pitch: enough assistance for steep access climbs and enough capacity for a long gravity-oriented day.
The eBike Flow app handles system setup and diagnostics, and the simple LED Remote handles the controls. If you already ride Bosch-powered bikes, the system will feel familiar.
Frame, sizing and how it rides
The frame is hydroformed, multi-butted 6061 T6 aluminium with internal routing. Whyte mounts the battery low and tilts the motor to keep mass central, which the brand says helps the bike stay balanced and composed when speeds rise. That is Whyte's claim, and the geometry numbers point the same way: a 63.2-degree head angle in the high setting, dropping to 62.7 degrees in the low setting, with a 444mm chainstay across all sizes.
The Shape. It link gives you two geometry positions. The high setting keeps the bottom bracket at 349mm and suits days where you mix technical climbs with descents. The low setting drops the bottom bracket to 341mm for a lower, slacker stance that favours descending, at the cost of a little pedal clearance. You can switch between the two using the supplied link system.
Wheels are mixed: a 29in front for rollover and a 27.5in rear that helps the bike change direction despite its mass. And there is mass. Whyte publishes 26.4kg for a size Medium, and that number is worth picturing before you buy. It is a bike you lift into a van with planning, not a casual one-arm hoist. Gates, steps and awkward storage all become small logistical exercises. Once rolling, the motor masks much of that weight, but gravity never fully forgets it.
Sizes start at Medium with published guidance beginning at 168cm, running through Large to Extra Large for riders up to 198cm. Reach grows from 455mm on the Medium to 510mm on the Extra Large, with wheelbase stretching from 1255.5mm to 1324.6mm. The Extra Large also gets the longer 170-200mm adjustable dropper, while Medium and Large run the 140-170mm version. If you sit at the 178cm boundary between Medium and Large, size down for agility or up for stability. The same logic applies at 188cm between Large and Extra Large.
The maximum rider-plus-equipment limit is 114kg. That covers you and everything you carry, so heavier riders with loaded packs should do the arithmetic.
UK ownership: battery, servicing and the wet bits
British riding is hard on bikes, and a full-power eMTB with this much travel needs routine attention. Mud and grit love suspension pivots, so a quick clean after wet rides and regular checks of the linkage are worth the effort. Brake pads on a bike this heavy, with 220mm front and 200mm rear rotors, do real work on steep descents. Inspect them regularly and budget for replacement pads as a normal running cost.
The RockShox ZEB fork and Super Deluxe Select R shock need servicing at their published intervals. Correct sag matters too: Whyte's service data suggests 16.25mm of shock sag at 25 per cent or 19.5mm at 30 per cent for the 65mm-stroke shock. Get that right and the long-travel platform does its job properly.
Two batteries need charging, not one. The AXS rear derailleur has its own cell, and a flat one will stop your shifting even when the main Bosch battery is full. Add it to your pre-ride routine or carry a charged spare.
The 750Wh battery is removable for charging indoors, and the 4A charger is included. What you cannot add is a Bosch PowerMore range extender: the E-180 platform does not support one. Plan your charging and support-mode use around the fitted battery instead.
The rims and tyres are tubeless-ready, but delivery with tubes or sealant varies between shops. If you want the puncture and grip benefits of tubeless on rough ground, confirm the offer and budget for valves and sealant where needed. No pedals are supplied either, so factor in a suitable pair from day one.
On the warranty side, the MY24 bike carries a standard two-year frame warranty. An eligible original owner can extend that to four years by registering within 28 days, and Whyte also covers the suspension pivot bearings for the lifetime of the original ownership. The parts warranty runs for one year. Registration is the step that makes the longer frame cover real, so do it promptly.
What changed from the previous Whyte E-180 S build?
The previous V4 build shared the same E-180 MX frame platform but used mechanical GX Eagle shifting, 165mm cranks and an earlier ZEB damper and air-spring package. The current V5 build swaps in wireless GX Eagle AXS shifting, shortens the cranks to 155mm and updates the fork internals. The shorter cranks suit the technical access climbs the bike is designed around, and the AXS system removes the gear cable from the equation. If you are comparing a used or discounted older offer against a current one, those three differences are the quickest way to tell them apart.
For the right rider, the E-180 S V5 is a lot of descending capability for the money. It is heavy, it demands maintenance and it does not pretend to be anything other than a gravity bike. If that matches your riding, the rest of the package falls into place.
Key Features & Benefits
- Low-mounted battery and tilted motor: Whyte says the mass placement keeps the bike balanced and composed when speeds rise, and the long, slack geometry points the same way.
- Mixed 29in front / 27.5in rear wheels: The larger front wheel rolls over obstacles confidently while the smaller rear helps the bike change direction on steep ground.
- SRAM Code R four-piston brakes: Sintered pads and 220mm front / 200mm rear rotors give confident speed control on long, steep descents.
- Size-specific dropper posts: Extra Large riders get a 170-200mm adjustable post, while Medium and Large run 140-170mm for better-matched saddle drop.
- Tubeless-ready DT Swiss Hybrid 30 wheels: The rims and tyres are ready for a tubeless setup that suits rough tracks, though valves and sealant may need adding depending on the offer.

| Extra Large | 510 | 658.6 | 63.2 | 62.7 | 75 | 444 | 1324.6 | 772 | 470 | 130 | 349 | 341 |
Alternatives to Consider
The Canyon Torque:ON CF 9 is the closest gravity alternative. It pairs a carbon frame with a Shimano EP801 motor, a removable 800Wh battery and Fox 38/X2 suspension, while the Whyte uses an aluminium frame, Bosch power, a 750Wh battery and wireless GX Eagle AXS shifting. Both are serious descending bikes, so the choice comes down to which motor ecosystem and frame material you prefer.
The Specialized Turbo Kenevo SL 2 Comp takes a different approach again. Its published 50Nm, 320W and 320Wh figures put it in the lower-output, lightweight-assist camp, whereas the Whyte's 85Nm, 600W peak and 750Wh system prioritises powered climbing and repeated runs. Think of the Specialized as the lighter-assist option and the Whyte as the tool for maximum assisted laps.
