The Trek Marlin 5 is a bike that is perfect for everyday adventures, both on and off the trail. This trail worthy daily rider is packed with features that make it an ideal choice for new trail riders or anyone looking for a comfortable, stable commuter with the ruggedness of a real mountain bike.
The Marlin 5 is a great choice if you're new to the trail and looking for a real mountain bike that doubles as a commuter, but also want to get all of this at an exceptional value. The bike comes with a lightweight aluminium frame that has internal routing to protect your cables and add to the bike's sleek look, a 2x8 Shimano Altus drivetrain, a wide range of gearing so you always have the right gear for your terrain, powerful hydraulic disc brakes and a terrain-smoothing suspension fork with a lockout.
We especially love the Marlin 5 for its versatility. It's a popular ride on college campuses because the rack and kickstand mounts make it easy to accessorize and haul a load. Additionally, smaller frame sizes (XXS, XS, and S) have short-reach brake levers that make it easier and more comfortable for riders with smaller hands to brake confidently. The Marlin models in size XXS to S also have a curved top tube and a lower standover height that makes it easier for smaller riders to mount and dismount.
It's perfect for those long rides with its rack mounts that make carrying accessories a breeze. The bike also has a Blendr stem and internal cable routing, which helps your cables last longer by protecting them from the elements. And finally, the rear kickstand mount makes it easy to install a rear kickstand that stays out of your way and supports bikes of all sizes.
The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes on the Trek Marlin 5 are the show stoppers. Hydraulic discs are hard to come by in this price bracket, so it's always a wonderful surprise when we do. Hydraulic brakes are the most powerful and accurate of their kind. Trek has gone as far as to provide the two smallest frames with special short-reach levers.
Your Trek Marlin 5 will ship with either 26, 27.5 or 29 inch wheels, depending on your height and the frame size you choose. 26 inch wheels are included with the size XXS frame, with 27.5 on the XS and S frames, and 29 inch from medium and above. This is a fantastic approach that is becoming more commonplace in recent years. The lower standover height makes the bike more adaptable to riders of varying statures.
Bontrager Connection wheels are used throughout the board. Because of its 32 spokes and double walls, they can withstand a lot of punishment. Both the 27.5 and 29-inch versions of the Bontrager XR2 tyres provide excellent traction, but they are not tubeless.
Another plus is that Shimano components make up all of the drivetrain of the Trek Marlin 5. Although they are beginner quality, they provide adequate performance and precision for the average rider just getting into the sport of trail riding. The Marlin 5 features a Shimano Tourney front derailleur and a Tourney rear derailleur, for a total of 21 gears on a 3x7 drivetrain. While the Tourney derailleurs are Shimano's entry-level model, the Altus shifters are a step up in quality.
Bontrager is Trek's brand, producing a wide variety of components and add-ons. Every saddle, seat post, bar, set of grips, and stem of a Trek Marlin 5 is branded with the Bontrager name. All these components are designed and manufactured by Trek to work exclusively on Trek bicycles, guaranteeing that they will fit perfectly and last for years. The lack of a tapered headset is a drawback of this bike, as it could make replacing the fork more difficult in the future.
Whether you ride bikes for fun on the weekends up a mountain somewhere, or to get around town during the week, you'll find everything you need in Marlin 5. Without any upgrades, you'll be able to go thousands of miles on it, exploring in every direction.
If you're looking for a versatile, reliable and affordable bike for your everyday adventures, this Marlin is an ideal choice. With its great features and exceptional value, we really like this bike at this price point and we're confident you will too.
