The Wilier Karga is a convincing choice for riders who want powered access to bigger, hillier off-road days without buying a race-focused lightweight e-MTB. Its 160 mm chassis, 29-inch rolling kit and 720 Wh battery create a stable, capable base for long loops, while the three-build range gives you a meaningful choice between EP6 value and the stronger EP801 suspension packages. Choose the premium build if regular rough descending is part of the plan; its ZEB fork, Deluxe Ultimate shock and XT brakes are a serious step up. The trade-off is a substantial bike that needs sensible storage, transport and maintenance planning. For the right rider, though, the Karga can turn familiar hills into a much bigger playground.

The Wilier Karga is for the rider who wants the climb to be part of the day, rather than the bit endured before the fun starts. It is a full-power, 29-inch e-MTB with 160 mm of front and frame travel, aimed at long woodland loops, steep rough climbs and repeat descents where a lighter cross-country machine would soon feel out of its depth. There are three materially different current UK builds under the same name, so the motor, fork, shock and brakes matter far more than the badge on the downtube.

Choose the Karga that suits your riding

The XT / EP801 premium build is the one for riders regularly tackling rougher descents and wanting the strongest ready-to-ride package. Its Shimano EP801 motor is paired with a RockShox ZEB Select Plus fork, Deluxe Ultimate RCT shock and Shimano Deore XT four-piston brakes. It is the Karga to favour when suspension control and braking confidence are priorities.

The mixed Deore/XT / EP801 build keeps the same 85 Nm EP801 motor, 250 W rated continuous power and 600 W peak power, but uses a RockShox Domain R fork, Deluxe Select shock and Shimano MT420 four-piston calipers. It makes sense when you want the lighter, higher-peak-power motor system but do not need the premium build's full XT and ZEB package.

The Deore / EP6 build is the value-led route into the platform. Shimano EP6 still provides 85 Nm and 250 W rated continuous power, although its peak power is 500 W rather than 600 W, and its aluminium housing makes it heavier than EP801. The RockShox 35 Silver TK fork is the clearest reason to reserve this version for more moderate riding rather than frequent hard, rough descents. All three use mechanical 12-speed shifting, so there is no factory-fitted electronic shifting to pay for or maintain.

Each current build lists a Simplo 720 Wh integrated battery and Shimano SC-EN600 display. That is ample capacity for bigger assisted rides, but it is not a promise of a fixed mileage figure. Assistance mode, climbing, surface, temperature, rider mass and tyre setup all move the result about. In the UK, assistance is listed to 15.5 mph; above that speed, you can continue pedalling without motor support.

Long, stable and made for bigger loops

The first-generation Karga uses a carbon front triangle, aluminium rear stays and protective rubber around the bearing areas. Its 64.5-degree head angle, 76.5-degree seat angle, 29-inch wheels and long wheelbase figures point towards a planted, roomy character rather than a light, flickable feel. On a long descent, that should translate into reassuring composure. On a steep seated climb, the steeper seat angle and full-power motor support should help you stay centred and keep turning the pedals.

Suspension travel is fixed at 160 mm front and rear, while the quality of the suspension changes sharply between builds. The shared chassis should bring welcome isolation from repeated roots, rocks and braking bumps when it is set up properly, and the 29 x 2.4-inch Vittoria Mazza tyres add useful grip and cushioning. It is a broad-use e-MTB, though, not a purpose-specific race or bike-park machine.

The size range runs from S to XL, with reach growing from 430 mm to 505 mm and wheelbase from 1213 mm to 1298 mm. That is a substantial progression, particularly at the larger end, so use the size guide rather than assuming that a familiar letter size will feel the same as another bike.

Living with a powerful e-MTB

The Karga rewards a little routine care. Its bearing-area protection is helpful when the bike has seen wet mud, but it does not replace gentle washing and periodic pivot inspection. Wet grit, motor torque and the mass of a full-suspension e-MTB can make chains, cassettes, pads and rotors wear faster, so cleaning and timely servicing will save money as well as keep the bike feeling sharp.

The Shimano MT620 wheels and Vittoria Mazza tyres are tubeless-ready, giving you a sensible early route to lower pressures and fewer pinch flats. Tubeless-ready does not mean sealant and valves are necessarily already fitted, so allow for those parts if the bike has not been converted. The listed KS LEV-Si 100 dropper may also feel short for taller riders or those spending lots of time on steeper descents; a longer 27.2 mm post may be possible, but available insertion and saddle height need measuring first.

The published 120 Kg system limit covers bike, rider and load together. On a substantial e-MTB, that is worth taking seriously before adding luggage or setting off heavily equipped. The Deore / EP6 build is listed at 24,650 Kg +/- 5%, with no frame size stated, while matching figures are not published for the EP801 builds. Plan for secure ground-level storage, a suitable car rack or a realistic stairs routine. For winter storage, keep the battery around room temperature and above 30% charge rather than leaving it in a cold shed.

Wilier excludes the Karga from its carbon-product warranty extension, so keep your proof of purchase and complete any required registration promptly. Battery replacement is also a model-specific service job: the 720 Wh capacity alone does not make a generic battery compatible, and the appropriate route is diagnosis and replacement through Wilier or Shimano service support.

What changed from the MY2024 Karga?

MY2024 introduced the first-generation Karga chassis, its carbon-front and alloy-rear construction, the 720 Wh battery, 160 mm travel and the EP801 or EP6 build structure. The MY2025 build set remained on that same frame generation. The current UK model should therefore be judged by its identified motor and suspension package, not treated as an all-new frame simply because a listing uses a different model-year label.

Alternatives to the Wilier Karga

The Cube Stereo Hybrid ONE44 HPC Race 800 is a close alternative for riders putting battery capacity first. Cube specifies an 800 Wh battery and maximum 120 Nm motor output, while the Karga has a 720 Wh battery and 85 Nm motor systems. The Karga counters with 160 mm front and frame travel, compared with the Cube's 150 mm front and 140 mm rear travel, making it the more travel-focused choice on paper.

The Canyon Spectral:ON CF 7 is a direct EP6-powered rival.
