Bikesy's Verdict
The P00 is the GSD for a household that wants one shareable cargo e-bike for school runs, commuting and heavy shops, with a belt and a twist-shift hub rather than a chain. The case for owning it is the load rating, 210kg gross and a 100kg rack, plus an 85Nm Cargo Line motor and weather kit that is already fitted. It is less convincing if you must lift the bike up steps, or if seats, covers and a second battery were left out of the plan. The longer published range is a dual-battery figure, not the stock 545Wh bike, and the machine itself is long and heavy to handle away from the road. Where storage is level and those extras are budgeted, the low-maintenance drivetrain and the carrying capacity are worth having.
Pros
- Separate 210kg gross and 100kg rack limits for passengers and heavy loads
- Enviolo Heavy Duty hub and Gates belt, rather than the chain on the P10 and S10
- Mudguards, lights, wheel guard, frame lock and locking stand fitted for wet commutes
- Tool-free Andros cockpit so more than one rider can share the frame
Cons
- Awkward to lift at 191cm long, and the 36.3kg claim may exclude the fitted racks and mudguards
- The 90-196km range claim needs 1090Wh, not the stock 545Wh battery
- Seats, covers and cargo containers are extra, so a family setup costs more than the bike
The GSD P00 is the belt-driven GSD for a household that wants one electric cargo bike on the school run, the commute and the big shop. In the GSD range it sits alongside the chain-driven P10 and S10 and the premium Rohloff R14.
What it can carry
Maximum gross vehicle weight is 210kg, the rider limit is 130kg, and the Atlas G rear rack is rated to 100kg. They are separate limits, and all three apply. Tern markets the bike for two children or one adult passenger. That is what the platform can take, not a set of seats and covers in the box.
The MultiTruss frame is DIN 79010 certified, with 20in wheels at both ends. The Atlas Lockstand Gen 2 is a locking dual-leg stand with a remote release, so you can drop it and leave a loaded bike standing while you sort passengers or shopping.
The belt and the twist shifter
The hub is an Enviolo Heavy Duty, with a 380% continuously variable range and a twist shifter, running a Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt under a full cover. You sweep through the ratios rather than clicking between fixed gears, and routine chain maintenance is not part of this build. That is the difference from the chain-driven P10 and S10. The R14 is the premium alternative if you want an electronic Rohloff instead.
The motor and the range that applies
The current bike uses a Bosch Cargo Line motor with 85Nm and 400% maximum assistance. Assistance is limited to 25km/h in the EU specification. One Bosch 545 PowerPack is fitted, and Tern's manufacturer planning figures for that battery are 45-98km. The 90-196km figure is for 1090Wh. That needs a dual-battery setup, so it does not describe the stock bike.
Dual-battery bays are built in, and Tern states compatibility with up to two 800Wh batteries. A second battery can extend the distance between charges, and it is not fitted as standard. The 90-196km figures belong to 1090Wh, not to every pair of batteries those bays can accept.
Both the current bike and the earlier specification are Gen 3. The current UK bike pairs the 545Wh battery with the Bosch Smart System, a Purion 200 display and Flow app connectivity. The March 2025 launch specified Bosch eBike System 2, and older descriptions of that earlier P00 also include a 500Wh battery and a Purion display. A year shown beside an offer is not an official Tern model year.
What is on the bike
Braking is Magura MT5 four-piston hydraulic discs with 180mm rotors, and the e-stop levers include a brake-light sensor for the RearStop light. Bosch ABS is not included. On a GSD, ABS is listed for the S10 and R14, not for the P00.
An Ignis headlight, mudguards, a wheel guard, the belt cover and a keyed-alike ABUS or AXA frame lock are fitted, with the rack and locking stand. The Smart System includes eBike Lock functions. GPS tracking and Smart Alarm need the optional Bosch ConnectModule, so they are not part of the bike as sold. Seats, weather covers, cargo containers and any second battery are separate choices on top of the official UK RRP of £5,900.00. That figure is a list price, not a promise of today's asking price, and the extras can add a material amount to a finished family setup.
Sharing one frame, and parking it
One frame is meant to be shared. The Andros cockpit and telescoping seatpost adjust without tools across Tern's published height range for this size, and the 130kg rider limit still applies.
On the road the bike is 191cm long. At home it can FlatFold, roll vertically or park vertically, and folded it measures 182 × 46 × 87cm, so the space it needs can shrink even though the riding length does not. Claimed weight is 36.3kg. Tern warns that this may not include racks and mudguards, which are fitted, so it is not a guaranteed ready-to-ride weight. If you have to lift it rather than roll or stand it, that bulk is the part of ownership to take seriously.
The adjustment is there so the same bike can do the school run and a later commute without a spanner between riders.
Key Features & Benefits
- 50mm Suntour cargo fork: A short run of front travel on a loaded cargo bike, rather than a fully rigid fork.
- Reflective tyre sidewalls: Both tyres have reflective sidewalls, so the bike is easier to pick out in the dark.
Geometry
One-size frame
Published geometry for the Gen 3 545Wh Smart System belt-drive build, one-size frame, 20in wheels.
| Size | Wheelbase | Standover | Bike dimensions | Folded dimensions | Seatpost to handlebar | Saddle to pedal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One size | 1350mm | 490mm | 191 × 68 × 116cm | 182 × 46 × 87cm | 49-59cm | 69-105cm |
Alternatives to Consider
The Riese & Müller Multitinker2 automatic is the close alternative if you want a Bosch Cargo Line, a belt and an Enviolo hub with automatic shifting rather than a manual twist shifter. It has a 625Wh battery, a 200kg gross vehicle weight and a 70kg rack rating. The P00 is the one with the higher published gross and rack figures, 210kg and 100kg, and you shift it yourself.
The Specialized Turbo Porto is a one-size longtail with a 90Nm motor, a 710Wh battery, an Enviolo Heavy Duty hub and a Gates belt. It includes front and rear racks and Garmin radar. The P00 adds front suspension, and its published gross vehicle weight and rear-rack ratings are higher.
