The Dawes Scenic is an electric hybrid for the journeys that fill most weeks: getting to work without arriving clammy, collecting a few bags of shopping, or taking the longer riverside route home. It pairs a removable battery with a rear-hub motor, practical kit and wide 700x45c tyres, so you can leave the backpack at home and use panniers instead. It is a commuter first.

The current UK model had an original UK RRP of £1,199.99. Earlier Scenic stock may show a former £1,399.99 RRP, but it is not established as a different generation or a meaningfully changed build. The useful distinction when choosing an offer is the frame: Low Step or Crossbar.

Home-delivery assembly can vary between sellers. If the bike is supplied partly assembled, allow for a proper final setup so the brakes, wheel fixings, gears and controls are ready for the road. It is money well spent on an e-bike.

What is the latest Dawes Scenic?

The current UK Scenic remains part of the original Scenic generation, even where a seller applies a 2025 or 2026 label. Its aluminium frame houses a removable 36 V 10.4 Ah, 375 Wh battery, while the Bafang rear-hub motor provides 32 Nm of assistance through five modes. There is also walk assist for pushing up a ramp or steep driveway, plus an LCD display and cadence sensing.

Assistance is limited to 15.5 mph / 25 km/h. Dawes claims a maximum range of 40 miles / 64 km, but treat that as a best-case figure rather than a promise for every trip. Higher assist, hills, cold weather, rider weight and loaded panniers will all reduce it. For routine commutes and errands, the battery capacity is sensibly pitched; for long touring days, charging plans matter more.

The Shimano Altus 1x7 transmission keeps operation straightforward, with no front derailleur to think about. A 38T chainring and 14-28T threaded freewheel should work neatly with the motor on flatter streets and rolling roads, but the combination is not aimed at very steep climbs or heavy cargo. The motor will take the sting out of ordinary gradients. It will not turn a fully laden bike into a hill specialist.

Frame, fit and everyday ride character

A rigid 6061 aluminium fork and frame keep the Scenic uncomplicated, while the 700c wheels and wide puncture-protected tyres favour calm, predictable progress over a sharp, sporty feel. Those 45c tyres should take some of the fizz out of rough tarmac, drain covers and compact towpath surfaces. The fork will still make sharper potholes felt.

JAK7 mechanical disc brakes with 160 mm rotors front and rear provide familiar all-weather stopping hardware. Cable-operated discs need occasional tension and alignment checks, particularly through a wet British winter, but they are straightforward for a workshop to service. The Scenic is intended for roads, cycle paths and smoother towpaths rather than technical off-road riding or rough trails.

Dawes Scenic Low Step vs Crossbar

The two current versions share the same motor, battery, gearing, brakes, wheels and fitted practical equipment. Choose the Dawes Scenic Low Step when easy mounting matters, whether you make frequent stops, carry shopping or simply prefer not to swing a leg over a top tube. It is available in Small and Medium.

The Dawes Scenic Crossbar uses a conventional frame and is offered in Medium and Large. Its appeal is simple: a more traditional hybrid-bike layout for riders comfortable stepping over the frame. Access and sizing are the meaningful differences, not performance.

UK durability, servicing and ownership

The Scenic arrives usefully equipped with full-length mudguards, an alloy pannier rack and an adjustable kickstand. That is a practical package for wet commutes and supermarket stops, without immediately adding several essential accessories. The rack load capacity is not stated, so do not assume it is designed for unusually heavy cargo.

You can charge the battery in the bike or remove it for charging indoors, which is handy when the bike lives in a shed, communal storage area or office bike room. A full recharge is claimed to take 5 hours. Prioritise a strong lock and secure indoor battery charging from day one.

Selected listings show a 22 kg weight, which is worth bearing in mind if your route involves stairs, station footbridges or lifting onto storage. Removing the battery can make a lift more manageable, but this is still a practical electric bike rather than a lightweight carry-upstairs machine. Its published system weight limit is not stated.

After the first few rides, it is sensible to have brake cable tension, rotor alignment and gear indexing checked as part of normal bedding-in. A rear-wheel puncture is also more involved than on a non-electric bike because the motor and its electrical connection sit in the rear hub. For riders facing genuinely steep local hills, a workshop may be able to assess a compatible 14-34T threaded freewheel, although the standard setup is best judged against the routes you actually ride.
