London Cyclo Cross Dates for 2017/18 Announced

If you’re one of our Southern based readers and you’re wanting to try your hand at cyclocross then the London Cyclo Cross League is one of the best race series to get involved in.

Run by a number of friendly London and home counties based cycling clubs these events are the perfect introduction to fast paced cycle sport.

Races are organised by age group and gender so if you’re a newcomer in your fifties you won’t have to worry about racing against youths in their prime!

There’s also a full timetable of children’s races too so the whole family can join in.

You don’t need to be a member of any organisations to race and neither do you need a licence. It can all be arranged on the day for supplementary fees.

Make sure you get to your event with plenty of time to spare because the queues for the sign on desk can take a long time as rider’s register.

You can enter on line beforehand and if you choose to ride a few events, taking out membership from British Cycling can keep the price down.

Cyclo cross has got to be one of the most accessible ways into cycling. It doesn’t matter if you get dropped, your race still continues. Even if you get lapped you’re still very much in the running, just be careful not to impede faster riders that are coming past you. Events generally last about 50 minutes so are of a duration that most people can sustain.

You can generally ride on a cyclocross bike, gravel bike or MTB. The London League races are run under a spirit of inclusivity so it doesn’t matter what bike you have, as long as it’s safe then they want you to ride.

As the races form part of a series you can accrue points over the season with your best events counting.

The league tables are released a day or so after each race has been run.

If you’re based out of London you can ride the Sussex League or the East Kent League. Some of the events are jointly run and points count for either series.

If you’re elsewhere in the UK you’ll probably find you have a great cyclo cross league near you. Our country is fantastic for cyclo cross racing, the conditions are perfect during our winters and we have a strong culture and history around cyclo cross meaning there are plenty of events and plenty of supporters and organisers.

Take a look at the provisional calendar below and see which races are near you for a try out. But be warned, once you try one you’ll be penciling in the rest of the events every weekend!
